Visit Angoulême, a historic city and capital of the Charente, where the world's foremost comic strip festival is held each year in February.
Visit Bordeaux, now inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, one of France's very greatest cities, and home of a major university.
Cognac, under an hour away by car, is the centre of the Cognac business, and visits to distilleries can be arranged.
The world-renowned Bordeaux vineyards can also be reached within the hour, whether Southward in the direction of Libourne, passing through the exquisite town of St Emilion, or Southwest towards Bordeaux (Margaux and Pommerol).
One half hour away from Passirac is the town of Aubeterre, with its monolithic church, and further on, Brantôme, with its Abbey. Further still in the same direction, you reach Perigueux, the capital of the Dordogne and a centre for pre-historic archaeological sites. Further South you find Bergerac, up whose Dordogne river valley you will find a string of fortified castles, attesting to a time when the English tried to hold Aquitaine.
If you are looking for a relaxing and exotic family walk, visiting the Palmyre zoo is a must.
